Welcome to the Directorate of Open, Distance and eLearning (ODeL) at South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU). We have programmes that suit you; that will give you a life-changing experience and open doors to numerous possibilities.
SEKU has departed from the notion that learning can only take place in a ‘brick and wall’ environment. We appreciate that learning can take place anywhere and at any time. Our goal is, therefore, to provide learning opportunities to learners in varied geographical locations as long as they can connect to internet. Our target is the learner who has a tight schedule during the day; those with physical disabilities; financially challenged to afford cost of transport and accommodation within SEKU’s environs and those facing mobility challenges and therefore cannot drive, cycle or walk to any one of SEKU’s campuses.
The Directorate of ODeL provides friendly platforms that enable effective and real time interaction between learners and their lecturers. Students who are learning synchronously meet their lecturers remotely or in virtual classrooms mainly through the Big Blue Button which is supported by Kenya Educational Networks (KENET) and Google Meet. Learners’ activities are managed, tracked and monitored through the Learning Management Systems (LMS) which SEKU has heavily invested in.
The Directorate of ODeL supports faculty in the search and quest for innovations, research and training approaches to online education as envisaged in the University’s vision and mission statements. Our staff are adequately trained on online instructional methods and are known for effectively employing varied pedagogy strategies to keep learners engaged throughout class sessions.
Currently, all postgraduate programmes in the university are offered through a blended approach in which case classes are online and exams are administered physically in any one of the university campuses/centers.
Starting May 2024, we shall launch distance learning in Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Education (MED) and Bachelor of Education (Arts).
