Directorate of Research Innovation and Commercialization

The Directorate of Research and Technology (DRIT) aspires to contribute towards training manpower in science, and participate in generating knowledge, technologies and innovations that contribute to national development while maintaining relevance and global competitiveness.

Drawing its mandate from part XVII of SEKU Statutes, the Directorate coordinates research, extension, consultancy services, vocational training, and production of education materials, seminars, workshops, conferences and symposia, with key focus on agriculture, forestry, mining, energy, water and environmental sciences on arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs). Our research, innovation and technology performance are demonstrated in the quality of research output and innovations, the impact of innovation and research projects we undertake, and the scope of the strategic partnerships so far established.
SEKU has a four-year partnership with a Belgium University - VU and Moi University for multi-dimensional research in sustainable improvement of livelihood in the ASALs, and another four-year partnership with Munich Technical University of Germany. We also have pact with Pwani University and Taita Taveta University College on biodiversity and conservation research.
Our strategic objectives revolves around five themes: innovation, research, technology, partnership and community service. The University has a pool of motivated staff who produce quality publications, prototypes, patents, products for income generation, community empowerment and general economic growth. The Directorate has now listed some ambitious school-based strategies in this aspect and has posted them in the University website. DRIT will continue to working strategically to facilitating and mobilise the reinforcement of the current teaching with research and income generation activities, through intra and inter-departmental collaborations in various viable projects.
