South Eastern Kenya University is now set to start technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programmes. This follows the successful evaluation of SEKU’s facilities and human resources by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) in the month of May this year during which the University was found to have fulfilled the requirements for registration and licensing.
In a letter to the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) TVETA has authorized the student placement body to give SEKU 660 students with an average of 30 student pers course. The registration now allows SEKU to offer the following programmes at Diploma level:
- Civil Engineering
- Building Technology
- Architecture
- Quantity Survey
- Automotive Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering (Plant)
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Power Option)
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Instrumentation)
- Fashion and Design
- Fashion Design and Garment making
- Agricultural Engineering
- General Agriculture
- Agricultural Entrepreneurship
- Information and Communication Technology
- Photogrammetry and remote Sensing
- Petroleum Geo-Science
- Supply Chain Management
- Cooperative Management
- Project Management
- Food and Beverage Production (Culinary Art)
- Social Work and Community Development
- Disaster Management
- General Agriculture
- Horticulture
- Building Construction
- Civil Engineering
- Disaster Management
- Security and Intelligence
- Fitness Instruction and Recreation Management

According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Geoffrey Muluvi, the grant of authority to launch TVET courses now allows SEKU to offer quality academic programmes at all levels, and live up to its philosophy of transforming lives. “Starting the TVET courses will give us the opportunity to offer the youth the much needed technical skills to make meaningful contribution to the country's development,” said Prof Muluvi.
TVET Director, Dr. Selpher Cheloti, has given an assurance that the above programs are only the first batch to be approved by TVETA. “More programs are on the way. The University wants, in the end, to address all areas so that we satisfy the needs of all those yearning for quality technical training.”
